Simmons University presents Addition, Subtraction, Abstraction, featuring new and site specific sculptural work by Annie Meyer, Nygel Jones, Joe LoVasco, and Damion Silver. This exhibition is on view from Monday, February 17, 2025 to Friday, March 28, 2025 with an opening reception on Thursday, February 20, from 5-8 pm and a panel discussion with the artists on Thursday, March 27, from 6:30-7:30 pm.

Addition, Subtraction, Abstraction brings together four contemporary sculptors working abstractly and innovatively with wood. Each artist draws on personal history, experiences, and everyday interactions as inspiration for their complex, abstract artworks.

Annie Meyer creates objects that offer expanded ways of thinking about body, gender, and self. They consider how our designed environment affects the ways in which we build ideas around gender and make objects that are interactive and hold multiple orientations. Nygel Jones constructs and paints shaped wooden panels and frames influenced by industrial design and pop art aesthetics. He compares the creation of his vibrant, visually sharp, and complex compositions to writing songs. Joe LoVasco’s sculptures begin as loose gestures that are continually refined over several iterations. His forms mix distinct curves and angles inspired by his surroundings and relationships. Damion Silver makes soft art for hard times. His vivid and precariously stacked forms incorporate bold colors and a true attention to surface quality.

Annie Meyer is a Boston-based studio woodworker, designer, and craftsperson. Annie holds a BFA in Industrial Design from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and an MFA in 3D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art. They have shown work in galleries and museums including Wasserman Projects, Fuller Craft Museum, and Cranbrook Art Museum. Annie is Director and Faculty for MassArt’s Furniture Design Certificate Program, and Lecturer at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.

Nygel Jones lives and works in Boston and graduated from Montserrat College of Art with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Arts. He grew up woodworking with his dad and uncle who instilled in him a deep appreciation for everything from classic cars and engineering to jazz music and action movies. He has shown his work widely in Boston, the northeast, and beyond. In 2022, he was named one of WBUR’s “Makers,” a cohort of 15 Massachusetts artists of color working to make advances in their respective mediums.

Joe Lovasco holds a BA in Fine Art from Montserrat College of Art and has had solo exhibitions at Hallspace Gallery in Dorchester, MA, the Carol Schlosberg Alumni Gallery at Montserrat, and Mingo Gallery in Beverly, MA. He lives in Haverhill, MA with his wife and 5-year-old son.

Damion Silver is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work spans printmaking, assemblage & sculpture. His work has been exhibited and published domestically and internationally. He currently resides in East Kingston, NH.
