The Simmons University Children’s Literature Summer Institute presents an exhibition of work by picture book author and illustrator David Hyde Costello from July 2 – 28 at the Trustman Art Gallery, located on the fourth floor, Main College Building, 300 the Fenway in Boston.
The show includes a selection of original illustrations and process sketches from David’s books Here They Come (2004 – Farrar, Straus & Giroux), I Can Help (2010 – FSG), and Little Pig Joins the Band (2011 – Charlesbridge) as well as sketches for his upcoming project with Charlesbridge, A Crow of His Own, written by Megan Lambert.
Also on display are samples of David’s three-dimensional work, from a six-foot-tall cardboard giraffe puppet to a four-inch-tall paper mouse puppet, and a range of work in between.
David graduated from Bard College in 1994. He has painted scenery for plays and motion pictures including Spider-man, Mystic River and The Fighter. His most recent work in the film industry is represented by the three Boston-sports-themed velvet Jesus paintings seen in The Heat, which is currently in theaters. He is also a ukulele player, “self-taught through the productive use of procrastination.”
