The Simmons University Trustman Art Gallery presents “Four Artists in Search of the Intangible,” featuring four established artists whose work examines the transient, ephemeral, and spiritual aspects of existence in different ways, from Nov.1-Dec. 9, in the Main College Building, fourth floor, 300 The Fenway in Boston. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Each artist brings a different philosophical approach to his or her search using a variety of media and imagery. Nona Hershey’s most recent work looks toward the intersection of earth and space. Her drawings and prints of clouds “attempt to capture wind and the mutability of time passing.” Hershey has been exhibited widely both nationally and internationally.
Mary Lang’s work is inspired by the “manifest radiance of apparent phenomena,” a Buddhist concept which imbues her photographs of water and other natural sources with a feeling of luminosity, emptiness, and stillness. Lang’s work was included in the 1994 DeCordova Annual Exhibition.
Fred Liang looks beyond the perceptually apparent world to create work using the human genome project as a point of departure. The confluence of Eastern philosophy and Western scientific inquiry shapes his imagery, and the intangibility, mystery and spirituality of looking into the structure of life. Liang’s exhibition venues have included Milan, Italy; Boston, MA; and Austria.
Esther Solondz was the subject of a feature article in the Sept./Oct. 2005 issue of “Art New England.” In addition to her exhibit in the Trustman Art Gallery, Solondz will work collaboratively with students on a series of rust portraits on concrete surfaces located around Simmons’s Main College Building. Her use of materials such as salt and iron filings is transformative, and these portraits created from rust are infused with melancholy and spirituality. Her most recent exhibit was featured at the NAGA Gallery in Boston in the spring of 2005.
