Lit

A Light Installation by John Powell

November 3 - December 10

The Simmons University Trustman Art Gallery presents “Lit,” a light installation by John Powell Nov. 3 to Dec. 10, 2004 at the Simmons University Trustman Art Gallery, fourth floor, Main Campus Building, 300 The Fenway. There will be a reception Nov. 11, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

On the heels of two recent light exhibits in the Fenway area, John Powell offers the region’s latest visual experience using light and text. The installation – located in the Trustman Art Gallery and outside at the main entrance of Simmons University – has motion sensors and allows the viewer to be an actor, triggering transient words, which saturate the walls of the gallery and the main entrance. Other area light exhibits include Cerith Wyn Evan’s flashing Morse code messages, which emanate from chandeliers at the Museum of Fine Art, and Joseph Kosuth’s neon text glow on the walls of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

A Boston resident, Powell routinely works with light and has created installations throughout the world. Locally, his projects include the illumination of the Bridges of Fort Point Channel, the Evelyn Moakley Bridge, the Weeks Foot Bridge, and the Boston Center for the Arts. He recently has been commissioned by B.V. Development LLC to create Les Zoetropes, a public art project in the plaza of the developer’s new high-rise building complex in Boston, where New Balance and WGBH-TV will be located. Powell is represented by the Howard Yezerski Gallery of Boston.

Trustman Art Gallery hours are 10 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 10 AM – 7 PM on Wednesday and Thursday. The Gallery is free, open to the public and wheelchair accessible.
