Simmons University presents “Recent Paintings by Catherine Kehoe and Nancy McCarthy,” Oct. 6 to Nov. 7 at the Simmons University Trustman Art Gallery, fourth floor, Main College Building, 300 The Fenway. There will be a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9. The event is free and open to the public.
The exhibit is the second in a series of “couple exhibits” that are part of the 2003/04 Trustman Art Gallery schedule. McCarthy’s work uses objects or images from the landscape or imagination as sources for her work. She describes her oil paintings on small wooden panels as “articulations of what is observed outside and how it reflects what is inside.”
Kehoe’s recent work includes flower paintings and portraits. Her work is driven by the tension between the desire to describe shifting aspects of form as defined by light, and the desire to find the essential structure that remains unchanged with the passage of time.
The juxtaposition of Kehoe and McCarthy’s paintings, while they are notably different, reveals the influence of the life the artists share together. They have been a couple for 10 years, and work in adjacent studios in their Roslindale, Massachusetts, home.
Kehoe is represented by the Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston.
